Welcome to Bug Bug!

I’m Lorilin, a stay-at-home mom in Chicago who reads books to stay sane. Even though I spend most of my day looking after my lovely and wild children, I always make time to read—mostly fiction, wellness, and memoir, with a few cookbooks and gardening books thrown in the mix.

Oh, this was a sad one. WHAT STORM, WHAT THUNDER follows a group of people in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastates the city. We hear from a mother who loses her entire family, a wealthy expat and his daughter, a drug trafficker, and an old market woman who bears witness to ALL THE TRAGEDY. This is one of those books you read to learn about something you knew nothing about but should have (at least for me). The writing is beautiful, and—this is cliche to say, but I’ll say it anyway—I was transported while reading it. I felt like I was right there beside these characters. I knew them and cared for them. It really helped me understand how devastating the destruction in Haiti really was after the earthquake.

This is the first year I’m listening to the advice of @roy_diblik_ (author of THE KNOW MAINTENANCE GARDEN) and turning my clean yard waste directly back into nourishing mulch. All you have to do is make piles of fallen leaves and then mow over them with your regular lawnmower. Then you can redistribute the leaf pieces wherever you want. I kept most of mine on the lawn, but I also put a lot in a back corner of my property that is honest-to-God pure clay soil 😵‍💫 and needs A LOT of organic matter. We’ll see if it makes a difference come spring, but I’m pretty happy with myself right now, can’t lie. What do you do to get your yard winter ready?

REPEAT AFTER ME…

AFTER is a book I read after my FIL passed away last year. It’s a fascinating exploration of what happens to our consciousness after we die (spoiler alert: it probably doesn’t just cease to exist). Psychiatrist and neuroscientist Dr. Bruce Greyson has collected and studied decades-worth of data from people who were pronounced clinically dead but then came back. This isn’t a woo-woo New Age-type book. It is well researched and beautifully articulated by someone with many, many years of experience in this pioneering field.
