High Holiday Porn (★★★☆☆)

high holiday porn bayme

From the title of this book by Eytan Bayme–and because it’s a coming-of-age story, yada, yada–I figured there was going to be some sex stuff in here. Great, no problem. I was looking forward to some funny stories–and was hoping for a bit of depth, too. Something interesting and creative.

I concede that Bayme is a good writer; he definitely made me laugh at points. However, I was so surprised and disappointed, honestly, that this book is basically THREE HUNDRED pages of straight guilt about masturbation. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not judging. I’m not Jewish, but I did grow up in a very conservative Christian household where sex wasn’t something to talk about. I have family members who are still struggling through issues with that stuff. I understand the whole religious guilt about sex, etc., angle. Been there, done that.

I think the problem with Bayme’s book, though, is that he never seems to move past it. Even though the book follows him all the way up into college, I never felt like he progressed past twelve years old. Who cares that Bayme is horny and feels bad about masturbating? That’s nothing new. I wish Bayme would have either added something interesting and unique to the conversation or allowed his memoir self to, you know, grow up a bit. (Or maybe he couldn’t because… Dear God, Bayme, you’re not still a virgin, are you?!)

Ultimately, High Holiday Porn ended up missing the mark. There was the potential for something really funny here, but the story was just too focused on boring ol’ guilt.

Still, Bayme is a good enough writer that he has my attention. If he publishes something else in the future, I’d still probably check it out.
